Add gutter line numbers to exported minutes

Configure continuous or restarting line numbers in a Word Page Layout.

Written by Max Sherman

Gutter line numbers make it easy to refer to a specific line during review, corrections, or approval. MinutesGenerator reads Word's native line-number settings from the Page Layout attached to a custom template.

Configure line numbers in Word

1. Open the .docx file you use as the Word Page Layout.

2. In Microsoft Word, open the Layout tab.

3. Choose Line Numbers.

4. Select Continuous, Restart Each Page, or Restart Each Section.

5. If needed, open Line Numbering Options to set the starting number, count interval, and distance from the text.

6. Save the .docx file.

7. In MinutesGenerator, open Templates, select the custom template, and add or replace its Word layout.

8. Export minutes as Word or PDF and inspect more than one page.

Line-numbering choices

• Continuous numbers lines from the beginning to the end of the document.

• Restart Each Page starts the numbering again on every page.

• Restart Each Section restarts numbering at each Word section.

• Count By controls which numbers are displayed, such as every line or every fifth line.

• Distance From Text controls the space between the gutter numbers and the minutes.

Line numbers are export-only Page Layout settings. They do not appear in the minutes editor, and there is no separate editor control for them.

A meeting retains the Page Layout revision assigned when its minutes are generated. Replacing the layout affects future minutes rather than silently changing historical records.
